Peebles Beltane Festival

Peebles Beltane Festival
Peebles' annual Beltane Festival is without doubt our premier event. Steeped in tradition, it's a celebration of the return of summer which has its origins in the 15th century. A week long schedule of events includes the installation of The Cornet, and the spectacular Riding of the Marches, culminating in the crowning of the Beltane Queen. The town itself is resplendent in a riot of colour, with local businesses and private homes bedecked in red and white, while hundreds of school children play their part donning traditional costumes from days of old.

Festival of local legend, history and tradition Beltane marks the return of summer with the lighting of fires; where people could burn their winter bedding and floor coverings, ready to be replaced afresh.

Beltane is a festival that marks the return of summer with the lighting of fires; where people could burn their winter bedding and floor coverings, ready to be replaced afresh. Referred to as a Gaelic ceremony, it has been celebrated for thousands of years throughout the United Kingdom and Europe.

In Peebles Beltane was originally held on May 1st. It is recorded that James I witnessed this festival in the 15th century. Later old May festivities have been combined with the Riding of the Marches and now happens during the third week of June that also allows to accomodate the school. The festivities last from the Sunday to the following Saturday, where the festivities culminate with the crowning of the Beltane Queen on the Saturday nearest Midsummer's Day. Visitors from around the world flock to Peebles to see this colourful pagaentry; some coming faithfully every year.
