Golfing

Like malt whisky, tartan and bagpipes, the ancient sport of golf will always be synonymous with Scotland. But while the majority of golfing tourists head north to courses like St Andrews, Carnoustie or Royal Dornoch, the discerning golfer takes a south turn at Edinburgh.

For those golfer in the "know" there are few greater pleasures than taking to the fairways in the Scottish Borders. Waiting to be discovered and only a 30 minute drive from Edinburgh are some of Scotland's most beautiful and inspirational courses.

In and around Peebles we are blessed with superb championship courses which are both challenging and generous. Throw in some of the country's most stunning scenery and of course a very warm Scottish Borders welcome from the club members who are fortunate to call these courses "home" and you will be glad you didn't follow the crowd heading north.

To whet your appetite we have included details of a number of typically fine Borders courses.

Peebles is a championship course, having played host in the past to the Scottish Girls Strokeplay Championship, Scottish Boys Team Championship and in 2006 the Scottish Girls Amateur Championship.

The course is considered one of the finest in the Borders for the quality of its turf, greens and the stunning views. It is a prime example of a challenging Scottish upland golf course.

The golf course is not totally flat but the slopes are not unduly demanding. Peebles offers an excellent challenge for all golfers - the tough opening holes are balanced by a more generous stretch where the eighth and ninth lead you back down the hill towards the clubhouse.

The back nine start off fairly gently until the difficult fourteenth hole, culminating in a very testing finish to an enjoyable round of golf.

Innerleithen golf course is a nine hole course located 32 miles south of Edinburgh and 6 miles from Peebles in the picturesque Leithen Valley.

This is an attractive course that enjoys quite magnificent surroundings while the River Leithen comes into play on no less than four holes. The course was designed in 1886 by three times Open Champion Willie Park and to this day still presents a worthy challenge.

There are several small burns that meander across the rest of the course. At the first hole the road, the river and a burn combine to make an extremely tricky opening hole. If you happen to go through the back, then more water is waiting for your ball.

There are no restrictions for visitors but it's advisable to contact the club in advance to check on available green times.
